What is OBOS
The book Our Bodies Ourselves (also known as OBOS) was first published in the beginning of the 1970s as a result of the work by The Boston Women`s Health Book Collective, and it has been a bestseller in the area of women’s health.
Currently represented by Judy Norsigian, its executive director, the organization stands out by its efforts regarding women’s health in the areas of politics, law and education, addressing issues such as the use of contraceptives, sexual orientation, gender issues, mental health, menopause, and so on.
Translation and Adaptation
The 9th edition of the book was revised and updated in 2011. This edition is the source text for the ongoing translation into Portuguese, which will be adapted to the Brazilian context, as authorized by OBOS.
This updated text addresses crucial issues for our time in history, such as reproductive rights, violence against women, safe sex, abortion, environmental health, including areas not only related to sexual health, but to the general well being of women. This is appropriate because, as it is noted in the introduction of OBOS (and is commonly known), despite decades of activism, women continue to be confronted with huge challenges and obstacules to safety and health in their lives.
OBOS has been translated into more than 30 languages in several countries in Africa, Asia, Middle East, Latin America and Europe. Its permanent goal is to deliver trustworthy information to less favored and stigmatized communities, empowering women by means of knowledge about their rights and about their own bodies.
